A Letter From My Sister In The Congo

Two years ago I decided to sponsor a woman through Woman For Woman International. Their mission is to “provide women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crises and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency thereby promoting viable civil societies.” In other words, these amazing woman who have overcome being victims of war, rape, loss of loved ones, are sponsored by women like ourselves for $27 a month for vocational training, business training and woman’s rights training to help rebuild their lives.

Here is the original and translated letter from my sister Aline. She is a 26 year old mother of 3 who has also taken in her nephew and niece. (click to enlarge) We have been corresponding for a few months now. I really love the fact that I can chat with her and we are on opposite sides of the world. I feel blessed to have “met” her.

Women for Women work in nine different countries around the world. I chose the Democratic Republic of the Congo because that is where my heart hurts the most. It’s amazing how my $27 that is billed to my credit card, can change a woman’s life and the lives of all of her children.

To me, this is an easy decision.
